Let me paint you a picture, if I may be so bold.
I’m on my way to work this morning. I’m actually ahead of the game so I’m in my car about 10 minutes earlier than what I should be. I decide to let my car warm up for once (amazing I know) and in the process I will clean up the trash in the front seat of my car. Seems like a very good idea … in theory.
As most of you know, the front seat of my car is cluttered with many things. Food wrappers, iced tea bottles, Katie’s cigarette packs, CD’s, etc. It’s a treasure trove of shit, as it were. Well today in the process of me cleaning out all of this crap, I found some CD’s that I had been looking for over the past two weeks. When I found them though … I was angered to see what had happened.
Why was I angered? Well you see, all of the rain that had been pelting New Jersey for the past two days, somehow it got under my hood, and then somehow leaked out from a hole I have, into the passenger’s seat of the car. To be fair I’ve known about this leak for quite some time, as it has been prevalent ever since my car almost flooded in the great Wildwood trip of 2006.
While I’m sure you are thinking I’m am going to use this Blog time to complain about my car and talk about how I’m going to get a new one (which I could easily do as I’m thinking about it), I am sorry to disappoint but I will be taking another path today. No you see the rain that trickeled into my car was very little, almost nothing. But all of it just so happened to get dumped onto my new Radiohead – In Rainbows CD that Katie got me for Valentine’s Day. This of course is made worse, by the fact that the CD case is made of cardboard and not plastic. Therefore, the entire case was soaked and has begun to peel apart.
I was angered of course, for I love this CD and I wanted to keep the case intact. I mean, the CD works still, but the case is not even worth drying out at this point. So as I sat here at work today, programming a macro that will keep our MP3 players on Amazon up to date, it dawned on me.
Yes, I think it’s time I import my entire CD collection into MP3 format and box up my CD’s … Don’t worry, I was shocked too by this thought. As most everyone knows, I have been a huge collector of CD’s and have gone through great pains to keep my CD collection with me at all times. Josh will recount numerous times lugging my trunk of CD’s up to school, and putting a paddy lock on it to ensure no one took anything. Katie can talk about the lost afternoons that she and I have had re-organizing them all after a semester of me just throwing the cases back in with no care as to what order they should go in.
I think the time has come to grow out of this. Between all of the CD’s that I lose, loan out, have cracked cases, lost cases, and whatever else, I think I would just like the comfort of knowing that no matter what I do with my CD’s, my music is safe and sound on one iPod. From there that iPod can move to the car, into my stereo, into another stereo, and whatever other place I deem necessary.
Granted there are some things I have to research. For example, how many mp3′s can I fit onto an iPod if I encode everything at 320 kbs? What safety and backup measures must I employ? Should I pay the premium price for the Apple’s, or do I play dangerous and get another brand (Possibly a Zune)?
Lots of questions, and a lot to ponder over the weekend … I will keep everyone posted, whether they want to hear about it or not.
